In the first keynote lecture of the Lower Sixth’s General Studies course, Head of Sixth Form, Mr James Bamforth took the opportunity to inspire, explain and challenge. He referred to our students’ individual responsibility to ‘seize the day’ in their educational targets and Stephen Covey’s ‘Law of the Farm’. He also encouraged them to make the most of the Sixth Form Pangbourne experience.

Firstly, Mr Bamforth referred the audience to the educational story of a former student. In spite of an unpromising start, this student made a reasonable showing at GCSE and then with ‘grit and determination’ went on to attain three, well-earned A* grades at A Level and a place at Bristol University. The College acknowledged his commitment and dedication to his academic studies by awarding him the school’s prize for the best humanities student on Founders’ Day.

Secondly, Mr Bamforth explained that now they were in the Sixth Form, each of them was ‘in the driving seat’ in terms of their futures. He encouraged them to be constantly looking for ways to be ‘the best version’ of themselves and to take responsibility for the direction and progress of their educational experience in their final two years of school.

Thirdly, he challenged them to be consistent and not leave things to the last minute. Referring them to ‘Law of the Farm’, one of his favourite parables in Stephen Covey’s book ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’, Mr Bamforth drew attention to the successful farmer being the one who reaps a harvest because he does the right jobs ‘in the right season’: he is consistent. A very fitting tale to help students realise how in all areas of a Sixth Form education (academic studies, co-curricular activities and personal development), ‘cramming’ at the last moment does not work.

Head of General Studies, Mr Jack Sims, said: “In the coming weeks we hope to have talks, in person or virtually, ranging from the Law to Marine Biology; there will certainly be something for everyone.”
